let me set the scene for you: two budding journalists are working on a weekly concert calandar that will appear in a popular free new york city publication. what an opportunity! do NOT celebrate by partying while writing. the results, while being absolutely hilarious, will also prove quite useless.
MERCURY LOUNGE
Thursday 3/31
The Album Leaf
Some people think this post-emo band is alright, while others think they suck. The electronic project from the guy who used to be in Tristeza, who were, as it was generally agreed upon, pretty alright for a while.
Friday 4/1
Something for Rockets
My Bloody Valentine spacey pop music but with way too much electronics like it’s bad disco music. Too much jangle and too little jingle, d’you know what I mean? It’s like you can shake your booty to it, but why would you want to? You’re at a rock show, man.
Tuesday 4/5
John Davis
John Davis wrote most of the good songs in Superdrag, who topped out at “Who Sucked Out the Feeling†3 albums ago, sending them into a slow but sure downward spiral, culminating with their “we can only take this so far†breakup.
SIN-E
[ed: we were supposed to write about three bands on three nights but instead we only wrote about three bands on one night. whooops]
Wednesday 4/6
Sandpaper: either these guys are black, or they wish they were black.
Stereofan are like Ween without the sense of humor.
Michael Levitson is like the Decemberists…on lots of heroin! a.k..a. the Shitty Microphones
BOWERY BALLROOM
Saturday 4/2
LCD Soundsystem
I heard a remix of that song “Yeah,†and all I remember is that it was dancey and dropped no names whatsoever, which surprised me. Served with Mahi Mahi.
Monday 4/4
Van Dyke Parks
Brian Wilson’s lyricist, which is a weird job to have. Whoa, just MENTIONING Brian Wilson makes me feel a little crazy. Vic Chestnutt wrote that song that Live covered on their MTV Unplugged back in ’94, in their “earthy†period. Come on, you know the one! I do like that song, though.
KNITTING FACTORY
Wednesday 3/30
PG Six
Coy folk music with mountain-man lyrics. This is what Thoreau was talking about when he said “Live free, child of the mist,—and with respect to knowledge we are all children of the mist.†He was really deep, man, is what I think I’m trying to get at here.
Thursday 3/31
Pinkslips
Three girls that look kinda old. They kinda make pop music. Supposedly they’ve kinda got attitude, but then again, when was the last time you saw a girl band with attitude that was good?
MAXWELLS PUB (HOBOKEN)
Thursday 3/31
An Albatross
If the earth was one big hardcore spazz freak-out, An Albatross would want to provide the soundtrack. We’d rather listen to Lightning Bolt.
Friday 4/1
The Hero Pattern
Like Weezer, but not as catchy, which is the only reason that Weezer is bearable in the first place. Together they’re playing a show with these bands called The Milwaukees, Lexington Down and Of The Hour.
Saturday 4/2
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Sounds like Talking Heads. It’s proto-post-punk with special attention paid to the grand marshal of funk, Otis Redding. Possibly with t.b.a, which, if it were an actual band name, may not be clever enough.
