Life never ceases to put me in contact with strange folk. It’s times like these I’m glad Olympus America Inc. invented the microcassette recorder thirty-seven years ago. Unfortunately, my preferred tool for documenting the spoken word tends to be inferior when it comes to clearly storing audio to magnetic tape. Even with the implementation of a pair of headphones as a microphone, the fidelity is far less than desirable. It’s a shame I can’t lug my large Sony cassette recorder everywhere with me. The internal microphone on that unit is far superior (you’ve heard clips I’ve posted in the past, like the practical joke Z and I played on Ilya, and the Steve Albini interview).
A somewhat stunning conversation occurred last evening and as much as I wish I could recall nuances or streams of conversation, my less-than-accurate short-term memory will not allow it. Does anyone know the name of a quality microphone that can be plugged into a 1/8″ input and will allow for higher fidelity recordings? No? Well, then I’m sorry I asked. I mean, it’s only going to benefit you in the long run when I find a way to manipulate and mold them into pretty audio clips.
