Illicit Phone Activities

Yesterday afternoon I received a package in the mail from the fine folks at Cingular Wireless. Apparently they stumbled across this-here website and decided to offer me a free phone with free data transfer service for a month, so that I could test out their new cellular music download service. From what I gather, they’re pretty much teaming up with Napster to provide the program as an extension on your phone. You use their service and can have MP3s sent to your inbox/phone that can be downloaded through Napster onto your computer. Then you can load said MP3 into your phone to use as a ring tone or just to store on a flash disk.

And I get unlimited purchases for the next month. Free.

It’s an honor and all (although every other blogger in the country probably received a phone also), but Cingular isn’t my wireless carrier, and I don’t have Napster on my computer, so the thing is pretty much useless. So, here’s what I’m going to do: if you already have a Napster, Yahoo! Music or Emusic account, send me an e-mail and I’ll use the phone to download and send to your cell phone or e-mail whatever you want without your incurring any fees. I’m pretty sure I can do this, as I haven’t signed any agreements regarding the phone usage, other than the one that says I won’t use it to place phone calls. And maybe I read their note wrong, maybe I’m not supposed to be offering my services in such a manner, but I’m sure the fine folks at Cingular will be more than timely in contacting me if this is not acceptable phone-testing behavior. Or, maybe they’ll remain quiet, and somewhere down the line send me a huge bill that I’ll just stare at blankly upon its arrival. I don’t know. I’m new to this. The way I see it, by simply mentioning this on my website (a very popular website, maintained by a very handsome man), they’re reaching more thousands of people that wouldn’t otherwise know about this new phone music service. Maybe when this month ends, I’ll send THEM a bill!

I guess what I’m saying is: if someone at Cingular happens to be reading this, do not hesitate to e-mail me and let me know if what I’m doing is a) unethical, or b) going to cost me money.

Again: if you have a Napster, Yahoo! Music or Emusic account, and want to get music for your Cingular cell pone, contact me and I’ll provide you with the link to download whatever you want, so you won’t lose any available credits or be charged for the song(s).

Oh, and I get to keep the phone at the end of the month, so if anyone wants a free Cingular 3G phone with flash disk, charger and wireless headset, I’ll fill the disk with free music and one you can have it (for free!).

Let’s not jump the gun just yet, I’ve got a month of data transfer to abuse first…
