Cingular’s MyBlueNotes And The History Of Uranus
By Evan ~ March 14th, 2007. Filed under: daily life.
A while back, I made reference to my receiving a new, free Cingular phone in the mail. The phone entitled me to “free data transfer” for one month, and my only required action was to post on the website MyBlueNotes about my experiences with the phone. I finished work today early, and noticed the phone collecting a fine layer of dust as it sat on my computer desk. I decided that today I would post my “blog” entry about the phone on their website. Let’s see how long it takes someone to delete it. If you haven’t clicked the above link, here’s the entry reproduced for you…It reads:
“the phone arrived a few weeks ago. it looked very sleek and cool. it’s much lighter than my current phone. i was excited to try out all the features about which i’d heard. i turned it on, it made a pretty sound. there was a sticker on the screen, so i removed it. i tried to access the program i was instructed to access on the card that came with the phone. it didn’t work, because the phone had no battery life. the phone charged for a few minutes, then i tried again, and it worked. it charged quicker than my current phone. i instructed the phone to send me an MP3, but it did some convoluted thing where it sent a link to a song in an e-mail addressed to me, and then i would have had to download a program to access said link, but i gave up and deleted the e-mail. then i read there was a surcharge for doing what i’d just done, so i vowed not to use the phone again for the remainder of the month. it seemed like the only thing i could do was transfer MP3s from my hard drive to the phone, and then use it as an MP3 player. but the fidelity is slightly worse than an iPod, whose fidelity is nothing to write home about. i’m sure that, when operational, the phone is really cool and valuable, but i can’t justify spending time with it when the only thing i can do is use it as a hard drive or MP3 player, because i already own those things and they’re tailored to my specifications.
last week, i put the phone in my pocket, took it to a bar, and showed some friends. they were impressed. they asked what it did. i couldn’t tell them, so we looked at it in awkward silence for a few moments, and then i put it away. it’s a good conversation piece for me to resort to, because o.c.d. and lulls in conversation make me anxious. for the past few days the phone has been collecting a very fine layer of dust. i’d take a picture using my other phone for you, but i see that “img src” is not an allowed html tag. speaking of which, the camera on the cingular phone is much better than that of my verizon phone.
like i said, when operational, the phone is probably excellent in all facets. much more so than my lg whatevermodelitis.”
- Here’s a fun little trivia fact you can use as a pick-up line tonight: On this date in 1781, William Herschel discovered the planet Uranus. For the next 839 years the planet was the subject of one of the stupidest jokes of all time, until–according to Futurama–the planet was renamed in the year 2620 to “Urectum.”
In the course of fact checking those two sentences, I discovered that not only was the planet originally called Georgium Sidu, but I learned that there’s an entire Wikipedia entry devoted to all the planets visited or referenced in conversation on Futurama. Luckily for me, this ensures that I am not nearly as big a geek as I thought I was.
