Comedown Monday

I just realized I had written out a nice, long entry and deleted the text file without actually importing the text and publishing it. Now I’m going to have to write this all over…
Last night was not cool. And by that I mean it was unbearably hot. I did not sleep a wink, and I say that without hyperbole. At four o’clock in the morning I was sitting at the computer, Googling ways to survive without air conditioning. Nothing worked. Everything seemed to contract itself. Whereas some “survivors” advocated turning the fan to face the street to funnel warm air outside, others suggested turning the fan to face me to bring in cold(er) air from outside. I even tried to create my own swamp cooling unit, with bottles of ice, bowls of ice, and cold, damp t-shirts combined in various forms with my fan. I was like an artist, subtly altering positions and experimenting with different combinations and placements. Eventually I gave up and sat in bed until the sun rose.
Good thing I had some plans today. The car registered an outside air temperature of 118 degrees at one point. I don’t know how accurate it is, but I imagine it was at least 100 if not slightly higher. I eventually found myself at a different Barnes And Noble from the one I visited yesterday. This one had much better seating options and was a slightly chillier atmosphere. I remained there for some time, because I received a phone call that there was no power in our apartment complex. I read The Economist, which had an interesting article on Google and why people should or should not be afraid of their growing power. Then I read Harper’s, which had an interesting article on the fortieth anniversary of the race riots in Newark and Detroit, and how recent times have seen almost no racial charged riots in the U.S., despite violent outbreaks in France and other nations. The author seemed shock that American cities were not burning in response to our government’s handling of Hurricane Katrina. After I’d read through those magazines, WIRED, The New Yorker, Fader, and Paranoia Magazine (hilarious articles on aliens, the JFK assassination (still?), Islamofascism, and Masonic evils), I bought a book of puzzles and left.
On the way home I needed to waste more time, so I stopped for sushi and a cookie. By the time I arrived home, the power was up and running again. Supposedly, this heat wave is going to break tonight or tomorrow. Maybe then I can return to my normal routine of spending all day bumming around the apartment rather than bumming around cafes and bookstores. To be honest, I don’t trust the weather service’s ability to accurately predict the upcoming weather. I wouldn’t be surprised if the thermostat touches 100 again tomorrow. We’ll see…
PS – Keep your eyes peeled as you surf this-here Internet. A certain cewebrity is going to make a cameo in an online advertisement for a certain “leader in media and market research.” For a non-actor, I think I did a pretty fucking horrible job. I make the worst faux-erudite face ever. Once I find the ad online, I’ll post a link here for you to see for yourself. So, so embarrassing.
