ESP and Its Practical Uses

New Scientist is reporting that researchers at the University of Tokyo (In Japan — they don’t have silly universities named University of Indiana Pennsylvania like we do in America) have created a headband that lets its wearer “feel” their surroundings from a distance. How it works is, a series of infrared sensors act like whiskers and vibrate whenever the person wearing the device nears an object. There’s a cool video on the site of people dodging objects while blindfolded.
I suppose this is a relevant scientific and medical advancement because it actually has some real world use. For example, blind people no longer would need to carry walking sticks to let them know where they are. Instead, we can outfit them in body casts with lots of little sensors that tell them when they are approaching an object. Blind people would also no longer need puppies to guide them through life, and these “leftover” puppies could be given to people or businesses that really need them, like Taco Bell and the local Chinese restaurant.
The invention of these human whiskers begs the question, when are scientists going to unlock more important doors leading to extra sensory perception? Being able to dodge a punch in the dark is pretty cool, but wouldn’t you rather be able to communicate telepathically or perceive information about events before they occur? I know I would. For example. I’m looking at two potential apartments today. If I had the power of precognition (or a scientific shortcut to precognition) I would know beforehand whether or not getting in my car and driving all over town is worthwhile.
Also, I’d like to know what people are thinking at all times, simply because I’m curious, and could possibly make fun of them for having stupid inner debates about whether or not that word they just used in conversation with me was pronounced correctly. People can be such fools!
In case you have not noticed, CNN seems to have picked up on yesterday’s anti-cola rant, as their lead Health article today is entitled “Soda Making Americans Drink Themselves Fat.” My influence on the media continues to grow…
