Brief News

This one has to be quick because I have a busy afternoon and evening. Whatever. Here’s the news:

- American kids are dumber than dirt, or so this piece in SFGate says. The high school teacher who provides quotes from the article isn’t ashamed to call his students “overprotected and wussified,” and state that they “don’t spend enough time outdoors and don’t get any real exercise, and therefore can’t, say, identify basic plants, or handle a tool, or build, well, anything at all.” Although I haven’t written about it recently, talking about the dumbing-down of America was a topic I used to explore at length on this here site. My arguments were mostly about the decaying of the English language in the age of SMS and IMs, but I’m pretty sure if I had an opportunity to speak to this teacher about it, he’d more than agree with me. So, there you have it, I’m some kind of genius, I guess. [story]

- A man dying of cancer placed a bet with some bookies that he would live until June 1st, 2008. The bookies gave him 50:1 odds. This reminds me of a story my senile relatives used to tell at holiday dinners, about how my grandfather was the oldest person to survive a certain kind of Polio. All attempts to prove their assertion have resulted in dead ends, which leads me to believe that maybe the psychosis-prone alcoholics I call family might also be liars. [story]

Okay, I have to go now. But if you’re still bored and looking for something to do, why don’t you watch 1991 – The Year Punk Broke:

Thank you for posting this. The first time I saw it I was only familiar with Nirvana. I’ve grown to love Sonic Youth over the years, so it was awesome to give this another look. I don’t believe it was ever released on DVD.
