It’s been LA-cold recently. That is, daytime temperatures have hovered around 70, and at night the thermostat is dipping into the 50s. Even though I happen to be looking at the specific numbers at this very moment, I don’t need a weather website to tell me it’s been cold. My internal weather station is more accurate than any meteorologist. Each year when the temperatures begin to drop I get a head cold. Sure enough, I had one last week that lasted four or five days. I also experience pain in my hands, which I believe is a result of the numerous broken or displaced fingers I faced as a child. Right now the throbbing/aching is centered on my left hand, which features my prominently broken pinky (which is crooked because I broke it in first grade before it had ceased growing) and ring-finger. Luckily, my right hand (two broken fingers) hasn’t been annoying me lately.
Perhaps more telling than broken bones or illness, my internal weather radio station has Codeine, Godspeed You Black Emperor, The For Carnation, and Labradford in heavy rotation. Like you, dear reader, I too have very distinct seasonal musical phases. Not only have I found myself listening to bleaker, starker recordings during frozen east coast winters, I have always written more (songs and creative writing). I wonder how winter on the west coast is going to alter this annual period of personal exploration…
- Soy Cafe on Hyperion is really good! I went there with Nick yesterday and ordered…something. I think it was a lemongrass chicken sandwich? Whatever it was, it was quite savory. Great bread, excellently seasoned chicken. Then again, most foods taste great with liberally applied Sriracha. I even sampled a jicama roll, which was equally delicious. If you’re impressed that I enjoyed the food there, just imagine what actual fans of Vietnamese cuisine would think!
- Harry Merry last night. What a trip. Drunk on Canadian Mist. Imagine Randy Quaid from “Kingpin” wearing a sailor’s outfit instead of Amish garb, singing in a voice that combines the unique inflections of Sloth from “The Goonies” and Lenny from “Of Mice And Men.” I think he was going for the whole Wesley Willis vibe, but it was clearly a facade. The title of today’s post is what I thought I heard him singing during the first song of his set. I doubt it’s actually a lyric, but it very well could have been.
PS – I think Ilya has another one of those CMJ shows out in Brooklyn tonight. Go support that hairy Russian sonofabitch hipster dufus! Again, I don’t know where exactly the show is, or when. Maybe somebody in-the-know could leave a comment informing everybody?
