Record Reviews: Up-Tight, 5ive, And Daturah

Ah, work. Where I spend money I don’t have on LPs because I see them cross my path during the day and grow to desire them more and more greatly over the course of the next several hours. And how tired I am when I come home. How bored I am waiting for something to happen ’round these parts. The clock could not move any slower when I am waiting for plans to form. I’ve never liked it. I can be very, very impatient. Especially when hungry. Of course, this would seem hypocritical when weighed against the fact that I almost never eat. But, alas, I have always been something of an enigma.

Three great albums I’ve heard this week:

Up-Tight
Early Years
aRCHIVE, 2007

Huge psychedelic rock from Japan that deserves a spot among the likes of High Rise, Les Rallizes deNudes, and the rest of the Japrocksampler bands who never received credit for their greatness until years after they’d disbanded. This album, re-issued by aRCHIVE in a limited run of six-hundred copies, is a huge rock explosion that would make the dudes (and girl) in Boris wet themselves. Perhaps a tip of the cap to some German ’70s bands are necessary as well. I sense a special fondness for Amon Duul in the Up-Tight sound. Listen to “Melt Rain” and then go try to find a copy at the aRCHIVE shop.

5ive
Hesperus
Tortuga Recordings, 2008

I fell in love with 5ive (not the boy band, you idiot) somewhere between Telestic Disfracture and Hemophiliac Dream. Their newest offering blows away everything else I’ve heard to this point. Multiple listens are definitely in order with this record. The Boston-based heavy rock band have put-to-tape a series of increasingly awesome tracks on Hesperus. It’s a metallic jam that traverses the space between doom-rock and hard-edged psychedelic rock. I’ve listened to this one at least a dozen times since it came into my possession, and I’m still baffled as to how so much volume can depth of sound can come from just two people. Drummer Charlie Harrold and guitarist Ben Carr will take you to the darkest corners of your subconscious. Listen to “Gulls” and then head over to the Amazon store and pick up a CD copy for about ten bucks.

Daturah
Reverie
Graveface, 2008

This one hasn’t officially been released yet (it’s due April 8th), but I loved their self-titled album when I heard it back in ’06, and this one is a massive accomplishment for the German experimental rock outfit. I guess the most apt descriptor would be “post-rock,” but they do more with their songs than just vacillate between really loud and really soft repetitive structures. It opens with a series of samples from Apocalypse Now before launching into a monolithic instrumental assault. Listen to “Ghostlight”, then head over to the Graveface store and score yourself one of the limited edition tri-colored vinyl LPs before they sell out.
