How I Spent My Day Off

There really isn’t anything better than waking up at 9:00am on your day off and going downstairs only to find that the Mets / Phillies game is already in the bottom of the first inning. Actually, I’ll tell you what’s better: The Mets beating the Phillies to take sole possession of first place in the National League East before twelve-noon. I mean, I had the whole day in front of me and I was on top of the world. And — wouldn’t you know it — I wound up squandering my day and not getting much done! I went to Sherman Oaks to see if I could find a birthday gift for my father (born 7/19/41), but came away empty-handed. I’m hoping to find him a suitable gift sometime before his next birthday. I lunched at Aroma Cafe in Studio City, which is what suburban New Jersey would look like if you moved it into the shadow of Los Angeles. Everyone there talks about work and leisurely things and homeowner crap that I can’t possibly relate to. In fact I barely understand it. What the hell is a mortgage, anyway? I think another problem with most of the people living in Studio City is that they have children, which is really quite disgusting. Even the people at the cafe who are my age look ten years older than me. I drove home “the long way”, taking Riverside all the way to the 134 entrance in Toluca Lake. I drove past the offices of Elektra, Atlantic, Rhino and Warner Brothers Records. That was a somewhat surreal moment. At first I thought, “man, wouldn’t it be cool to work there? Imagine how much back-stock I could steal?” and then I remembered that until that very moment I’d vowed never to sell-out to the man and go to work for any greedy corporate fucks in the music business. Once I realized that I had capitulated and admitted it might provide me with more security than my current job, I suddenly felt very old and very pathetic. So much for the Mets game bringing up my spirits for the remainder of the day. It’s 6:00pm now, and I’m back to hating myself. I should channel all this self-deprecation into an awesome top ten list for tomorrow. And now, if you’ll excuse me, I have more beers to consume!

Oh, I’m selling off about thirty records from a collection I just purchased, and the starting bids for some of them are unusually low. If you want to own something that once belonged to me, now is your chance! See my current eBay auctions
