Record Store Day was a smashing success. We brought in, as far as I know, the 2nd largest amount of dollars in any sale in the history of the store. The only day that outperformed yesterday was Christmas ’08. Who the hell says we’re in an economic depression? When a tiny independent store can rake in twice my annual salary in a span of nine hours…it really makes one wonder. I’d post some pictures to prove how much pandemonium there was yesterday, but I’ve yet to find any circulating online. Oh well, it’s your loss.

That said, today was a miserable day! The store was practically empty and everyone was a bit tired/hung over from yesterday’s non-stop excitement. Not only that, we had to deal with a billion phone calls asking if we had any leftover exclusive releases. No. So for anyone who’s looking for the Jesus Lizard 7″ set or the live Pavement LP, I can’t help you. What I can do is share with you some of the music contained on those items which are now selling for absurd prices on eBay. Behold, this week’s installment of the Sunday Mix Tape!

RULES for uninitiated noobs: With roughly 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods or Zunes or Kingklangs or whatever the industry is currently pushing on you. Sometimes there will be themes that link all the songs together, other times I’ll just throw songs at a wall (not literally) and see what sticks. The theme of today’s mix is material from Record Store Day exclusive releases, plus some weird out-there stuff from my collection that will hopefully not repel everybody who finds this page just for the stupid Flaming Lips MP3 The goal of this endeavor, as always, is to pique your interest in these artists so you’ll support the artists and buy their albums.

I am glad to see this mix! Got the Magnolia Co., but no Sonic Youth. Had to be at the store 3 hours before it opened to get those. Thanks for sharing some of the stuff I had to be a douchebag to get. Not calling you a douche, since you work for a store. Also, I saw Acid Mothers Temple tonight. Was amazing. Let me know if you want me to share.

Thanks for posting this. I picked up a lot of these records at Amoeba in SF – but digital copies are great. I also really liked the Thrill Jockey compilation. It is actually b/c of that comp I found your site. I looked up White Hills after listening to the track on the comp – and found your site. Would love to see Abstractions and Mutations re-upped! ;)

Thanks so much for posting the MECo tracks! Don’t suppose you could post the other two from the 7″ as well? I bought it on Saturday, thinking/hoping it would come with a download code/coupon, but it doesn’t and I don’t own a turntable to play it on, much less a way to rip/convert it to mp3.

I didn’t get to any of the shops that had anything good left, but DID find the Jay Reatard / Sonic Youth at Goner Records web shop. I’d have bought all the exclusives had I been able to at retail price, but I’m not a collector, so I’m not willing to pay a premium to record shop employees that have ebay accounts.

Thanks for making these available for music fans who would otherwise be (to paraphrase Matador Records blog post) be shit out of luck.
