• In case you’ve ever wondered about the value of old NES Nintendo Games, or the people who pay for rare cartridges, here’s a classic story of some nerd dropping $17,500 in the middle of a recession to own Nintendo World Championships Gold. Actually, it’s not so much a “classic story” as it is a huge dweeb retelling the story about how he saw it on eBay and made an offer, then didn’t get it, then got it, then almost got scammed, then finally got it. Coming soon to a theater near you. Starring the dude who had sex with the pie in American Pie, and Ernest Borgnine as “the professor”. For more information about the history of the Gold cartridge, please read this handy Wikipedia entry. I haven’t the time nor the energy to care. Seventeen-thousand, five-hundred dollars. For fuck’s sake! [story]
• A few weeks ago I wrote about the return of Futurama to television sets across the galaxy. There was much rejoicing. Then I read this article in Variety about how Fox TV is thinking of recasting the entire show and ditching all the original voices. Now I’m thinking that David X. Cohen and company should do everything in their power to subvert Fox and ruin Futurama so that no new episodes go into production. I’d be much happier with my memories of four amazing seasons of animated television than have one shitty “comeback” season ruined by ineptitude and greed. The straight-to-DVD movies were bad enough to soil my unblemished record of loving and respecting Futurama, new voices and terrible new episodes might just obliterate the show’s legacy. [story]
• Budget Travel magazine has shared a list of America’s favorite restaurants. They don’t visit every state, but there are entries from both New Jersey and California so I think it’s worthy reading for anyone who reads this page either in my home state or the one in which I currently reside. Also, I’ve eaten at North End Cafe in Louisville, so it was exciting to see somewhere familiar made the list. I haven’t eaten at either of those places in Jersey, nor have I visited the California restaurants. Someday… [story]
• This one is speficially for Pat, should he be reading this post. Here’s an article about making the move to New York City, and how five editors did it successfully. Sure, they’re print editors and not film editors, but I bet there are more similarities than you’d think. [story]
• “Jumbo flying squid have invaded the shallow waters off San Diego, California, spooking scuba divers and beachgoers after washing up dead on the beaches.” I’ve never seen a jumbo flying squid before, but I think I’m going to be down in sunny San Diego next week, so maybe I’ll hunt the shorelines for a dead one. • A hilarious story ran on FOX News’ website today. This morning, a report detailed how a biomass-eating robot created by the military could “eat” biomass in the environment as well as use conventional fuels. The article also inferred that the robot (named EATR) could live on human or animal remains. In fact, that statement turned out not to be true! This led to a number of websites across the internet following up on the story and, obviously, freaking out about the fact that the military invented a human-eating robot. FOX was forced to amend the article, adding the sentence: “Contrary to reports, including one that appeared on FOXNews.com, the EATR will not eat animal or human remains.” Whoops! Nice goin’ FOX! • In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the moon landing, NASA has released restored video footage of the 1969 moonwalk. At this moment, Tom, Nicci and I are watching the original CBS broadcast (with the late Walter Conkrite) of the lunar landing on the History Channel. Very cool stuff. It’s a shame we don’t have a single thing we can point to as a greater accomplishment in the last 40 years. What does that say about the progress America has made over the last few decades? What does that say about our generation when we can’t lay claim to any single event worthy of similar feelings of joy or pride. [story]

if you get the new voice of leela i’ll eat crow. you don’t sound enough like katey sagal…but i guess maybe if you got the job you could put in a word about hiring me to write. THAT would certainly help secure the show would not be ruined.
