Dionysis Savvopoulos – Ballos

Born in Thessaloniki Greece in 1944, Dionysis is a composer, lyricist and singer who is often regarded as one of the most important Grecian musicians of the 20th Century. In 1963 he moved to Athens and — after ceasing studying law in favor of music — found great success both at home and abroad. A political activist, he was imprisoned by the Greek military junta during its reign in 1967. His music has remained popular throughout his recording career. In 2004 he was even hired as the musical director of the Olympic closing ceremonies.

Ballos was released in 1970, and is considered to be one of his most psychedelic, progressive albums. Others have noted a distinct Zappa influence on some of the songs. The opening track, “Ballos” is a sixteen-minute long freak-journey that is heavy on traditional folk elements. “O Paliatsos Ki O Listis” is, amazingly, a Greek rendition of Bob Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower.”

Dig it.
