Contest: Win Ben Frost Concert Tickets & AURORA Vinyl LP
You guys all know how much I love Ben Frost, right? Back in June I called his album, AURORA, the best release of 2014…so far. If you’re too lazy to click that link my little blurb about it said, “Synth heavier (way heavier than previous albums) and industrial and heavy and propulsive and black and then suddenly chimes and clean synth chords and prettiness and grooviness. Itís totally unpredictable and yet somehow it all flows perfectly together. Whereas BY THE THROAT felt more calculated, this one is primal and spine-tingling. I love it.” I still listen to it at least once a week. I play it at work all the time. To the point where my co-workers are really starting to get annoyed with me.
You can imagine my excitement, then, when I found out that Ben Frost will be performing in Los Angeles on October 28th at Club Los Globos (you know the place) with Tim Hecker (!!!) and Pete Swanson (!!!). If I know my LA electronic/noise/ambient shows, this is going to be far and away better than the Pharmakon/Haxan Cloak show I carried on, and on, and on about a few months ago. Of course I got my tickets within hours of hearing the announcement. I mean…this is three absolute heavyweights performing in the same space on the same night. This is three Swan Fungus all-time favorites. The only way this could be any MORE Swan Fungus would be if somehow Aidan Baker got added to the bill, amirite!?
Then the other day one of my lovely press contacts at Mute (Ben Frost’s label, along with Zola Jesus, Can, Mick Harvey, The Residents and others) wrote to me asking me if I wanted info about the show. Obviously I told them I knew about it but would like to help promote it. So guess what? I got TWO FREE TICKETS plus a copy of AURORA to give away to one of my readers. That means one of YOU GUYS. Cool, right? You’re god damned right it is.
So here’s the deal. E-Mail me (evan AT swan fungus DOT com — no spaces, you know how it works) and tell me about your favorite concert. Who’d you see? Where/when was it? What made it so special. I don’t need a your life story. I don’t even need a five paragraph essay. A couple short sentences should work. Then I’ll pick one person at random and you’ll get two tickets to the show AND a copy of AURORA to spin at home. The only caveat is that you have to live in Los Angeles or know you’re going to be in the city on the day of the show. Sorry, I don’t think myself OR Mute wants to pay for airfare/accommodations to fly you and a guest to LA for one night. Hell, to sweeten the pot a little more I’ll even buy you and your guest a drink at the show. Because why not?
Here’s a perfect example of a possible contest entry:
My best concert ever was Spiritualized / Radiohead at Radio City Music Hall on April 18th, 1998. It was the first time I ever heard Spiritualized (which changed my life), and Radiohead’s set still stands as the best headlining set I have ever witnessed. They played DEEP cuts (“Bishops Robes”! “Lurgee”!) as well as plenty of material from OK Computer, an album that fundamentally changed the way I listened to music. I’ve seen plenty of great concerts in my life – too numerous to count at this point – but that one sticks out in my mind as the best. concert. ever.
See? That was easy. It took like 45 seconds.
