Explosions In The Sky – The Rescue

I’m going to be incredibly busy this week with extracurricular activities so I’ve got to phone in my five An Album A Day posts this week. Next week I promise I’ll go all-out and rip some weird, fucked-up private press gems from my collection, but right now I’m too pressed for time. On the plus side, I’m helping a friend with launching and promoting one of his passion projects. It’s fun and creative, so at least my free time is being swallowed up by something I enjoy. I’m sure I’ll be posting more about it in the coming week(s) so if this all sounds a little opaque bear with me.

The next five days will be devoted to some cool limited-edition CDs issued by the venerable Temporary Residence, Ltd. label. The Travels In Constants series was a 23-volume series of EPs that were recorded by different artists over the span of nine years (1999-2007). Most of these artists were signed to the label, others were not. Although I’ve been selling off my collection (it was complete…for a while) as I downsize my CD collection I’ve kept the most important titles. Knowing my tastes as you know them, I’m sure none of what I’ll be sharing this week will surprise you.

Remember back in 2006 when I was living on the East Coast? You can imagine my 23-year-old music nerd joy when I learned TRL head honcho Jeremy DeVine (no relation) announced a festival to be held at the Bowery Ballroom over three nights in September. It was to be a 10th birthday party for the record label. Scheduled to appear were Envy, Explosions In The Sky, Eluvium, Mono, Fridge, Tarentel and others. Of course Ian and I got tickets. And though I don’t remember ALL the details (I was probably drunk and maybe stoned?) there was a LOT of merch for sale including freshly-pressed copies of the EITS contribution to the Travels In Constants series. To that point it had only been available via mailorder subscription I believe. How weird is it that if I forget the details of an event I can retrace the past eight years of my life on an almost day-by-day basis using my blog? Apparently I skipped one of the nights because Shellac was playing in Brooklyn at the same time. So there ya go. Here’s my review of the last night of the festival. Complete with fuzzy photographs and Mono’s setlist!

This one isn’t that hard to find, so don’t spend too much time/money on it. I think the band also released it digitally for free so I don’t feel bad linking to the Archive.org page that contains the files.
