May 2 - May 3, 2007 Amarillo

The day I spent in Amarillo turned out to be the coolest of this brief road trip. Apologies to Ben Michael in Albquerque and Matt in Arizona. You cannot compete with Cadillac Ranch.
The weather band speaks of tornados in the Texas panhandle. I am approaching the area and watching the horizon for signs of danger.
I want every structure I pass to be a slaughterhouse. I want to walk inside and ask to take a tour.
This is the world's largest cross, located in the town of Groom, Texas. If you think this looks familiar, go back to the second day of this trip and look at those pictures. I saw an identical structure either in Illinois or Missouri. Someone should notify the Groom town council.
Conditions worsen. The rain begins. Heavy rain. The weather band reports of tornados, hail, and dangerous road conditions. I turn off the camera for the day and race to Amarillo. I eat for free in the hotel and gorge myself on several courses worth of food. I try to get myself drunk on cheep beer but it never happens. The next morning, I discovered Cadillac Ranch.
After taking an abnormally long time to clean my feet off after wading through football fields filled with cow shit, I was back on the road. No one told me Cadillac Ranch was going to be such a dirty endeavor, but it was the highlight of this trip.
