I received a very nice care package from the East Coast tonight with some delicious libations. Plenty of Grimm Artisanal Ales including a couple freshly-canned IPAs should make this evening’s transition from work-week to weekend a bit more relaxing. I’ve got a couple horror movies queued up on the ol’ Netflix box, I stir-fried some chicken and vegetables, and so far Grimm’s Forcefield has been a delightful new discovery.
I ate some amazing Korean food last weekend from Jang Choong Dong down on Western. I met my buddy’s Adam and Doug after work and feasted on pan-fried squid, soon dae (intestines stuffed with cellophane noodles, barley and pork blood), and jok bal (boiled pig feet). Everything was outstanding. Washed down with a couple bottles of soju, it made for a very fulfilling night. Other than that, last week was filled with jamon wrapped dates and a lot of wine downtown, drinks at Mohawk Bend, and a night in Santa Monica at Library Ale House for the Modern Times Monster’s Park “Fortnight Of The Monsters” tasting. I guess if I had to rank this year’s offerings they’d be coffee (1st), bourbon-barrel aged (2nd), coconut and cocoa nibs (3rd) and vanilla (4th). The ‘nilla was just too overpowering, like extract with a hint of beer. The coffee was the star of the show. I didn’t buy any bottles this year when they were made available, and although I had a great time at the Alehouse sampling the different variants I’m not too bummed to have passed on bottles. I’ve got enough laying around to consume, I don’t have to add a dozen more to my overcrowded cellar. Of course, I say that knowing that tomorrow I’ll be driving down to San Diego to pick up an order from AleSmith. I can’t say I have no impulse control…but I don’t have much.
