There Is Nowhere To Hide

The simple statement “Hello world” feels so…been-there-done-that.

And yet this is the first thought that comes to mind when I consider writing here for the first time in a month. Those of you who still subscribe to the Swan Fungus RSS feed, or check the site regularly looking for updates, deserve better. And here I am sitting on my couch with the TV on the in the background, eating a bagel and drinking a beer, just like I was when I started this self-reflexive exercise back in 2005. Wow, Swan Fungus is nearly eleven years old? It should be treated with more reverence. It should be treated with more reverence. With that in mind, I owe it to myself to at least try and update the blog with more regularity. If 2015 was the worst year ever for yours truly, wallowing in self-pity while my creative outlets withers away most likely won’t help matters. So, here I am. Let’s see how long I can keep this going.

To start, I’ll post a mix tape. Those were always fun, right? Nothing says “moving forward!” like looking back and rehashing a feature that’s been done nearly 400 times before. Alas, a conversation with a co-worker last week led to a discussion of blogs. He was telling me that his two favorites (which will remain nameless because why promote people I don’t know and/or care about?). One of them – he boasted – posts weekly mix tapes! Can you imagine? I had to bite my tongue to keep from saying, “I was doing that back when that blogger was still in elementary school.” Granted I would never truly say something as profoundly stupid as that, because I’m not some Waxidermy-worshiping troglodyte who ascribes greatness to discovery.

In the meantime, if you’re looking for something fun to read check out the latest issue of The Pitchfork Review. My dear friend and incredibly talented writer Lisa wrote an outstanding piece about a day in the life of an NYC proto-punk in 1976. I don’t know where exactly to find the Pitchfork Review, but it’s worth the time and labor investment to track down a copy and read her words.

And now…
